App FAQ
We've made a few changes to our iOS app recently, and so have created this page to explain what's changed and why. Please feel free to email us if you have further questions, and we will add the answers below.
There were a few problems with the old version of the app, which were very difficult to change. In the end, we decided that the best way to move forward was to create a brand new version. The main problems, and changes, are outlined below.
Push Notifications
Over the last few years, we have started covering more and more leagues. That has meant that more people are using the app, which has meant that we are sending more notifications. The service provider that we were using to do this was free (albeit powered by Google) and as such had no service-level agreement. Over the past few months, more and more notifications were being delayed, meaning that people were finding out about goals minutes - or sometimes even hours - after they'd been scored.
We have now moved to a different provider who do have a service-level agreement in place, which means that our notifications should all be delivered promptly, no matter how many we send. The downside of this is that users will have to opt-in to their team's notifications again, as it isn't possible to transfer the old data to the new provider. There is also a slight chance that some people will receive duplicate notifications; if that happens to you, please delete the app entirely and then re-install.
Adverts
One of the most noticeable changes is the introduction of whole-screen adverts. If you haven't upgraded (see below) you will see these roughly once every two or three minutes whilst using the app. We've spent a lot of time and money on this update, and so need to recoup some of that outlay.
We understand that people don't like seeing adverts, which is why we have always offered users a way of upgrading to remove them.
Upgrading
You can remove all of the adverts, and receive notifications from more than one team, by upgrading (via the 'Settings' menu). If you previously purchased an upgrade, you will be able to restore your purchase; if not you may upgrade with an annual subscription.
We felt that the introduction of this version was the right time to move to an annual subscription instead of a one-off purchase, although we are happy to honour the purchases made prior to this version going live.
Fixes and Future Updates
We've completely changed the way that the app is developed, which means that it will be much easier to fix anything that's wrong or add more functions in the future. Most of the content now comes directly from our servers, which means that we don't need to build a new version, get it approved and wait for users to install it before you see any changes.
Android
We are still working on the Android version of the new app, but hope to launch it soon.
